PROJECT 1: GAME DESIGN DOCUMENT

Instruction

There will be exercises or projects due each week so it will be critical to maintain the schedule, or you will fall behind quite quickly. Description Students are required to design and create their own 2D side scrolling/platformer game. The game design document serves as a blueprint for their game and will contain all the necessary information and visual references to develop the game. Sample GDD will be provided as a reference, but students are expected to research more on matter to determine the necessary content items for their own GDD.

Ideation & Brainstroming Process

During week 1 to 4, I started researching existing platform games, I dived into the colorful world of digital adventures, exploring pixelated worlds and amazing jumps. I looked into different themes like fantasy realms with magical creatures or futuristic cities, searching for an exciting idea for my own game project. Inspired by the creativity of existing platformers, I began brainstorming innovative ideas to create a cool game of my own.

And here is the first draft of game ideas that I had.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 6:
(Game Ideas) Had an online feedback session with Mr. Razif. I proposed 3 ideas to him and he said he was okay with any theme that I chose. When I said I like the monkey idea, he thinks it would be interesting to see how I would animate the character's movement because it is an animal. Also, he said it's better for me to create 2-3 levels only because 4 is too many.

REFLECTION

Experience
Embarking on my first game development project was a lot of fun. I enjoyed researching existing games and exploring different themes to come up with an exciting idea. Choosing a topic for my game proposal got me really excited, I'm quite happy with my idea, I feel like it's quite original and I will enjoy illustrating the assets, but I also knew that the rest of the project would be tough since it's my first time designing and coding a game using Unity. It's a lot of work.

Observation
During my research, I noticed that there are so many different themes in platform games. I saw fantasy worlds with magical creatures and futuristic cities with cool technology. Each theme had its own unique appeal and could create a different kind of gameplay experience. It made me realize how important it is to choose the right theme to make my game engaging and interesting for players.

Findings
When I presented my final proposal to my lecturer which is a game titled "Monkey's Great Escape", I knew that the real challenge was just beginning. Designing and coding a game on my own using Unity would be difficult, especially since I didn't have much experience. But I was determined to learn and overcome the obstacles that I would encounter along the way. I knew it would be a learning experience, and I was ready to embrace the journey with enthusiasm and perseverance.
