PROJECT 1: DRAFT DISSERTATION

Instruction

Please update the assignment in Word or PDF format from the provided Cover Page (page 11 of MIB) to the last page of the Appendices with complete References in APA format with picture credit, and a list of Table/s and Figure/s. (See APA reference style version 7 as the link provided in MIB page 10 table of this module).

Literature Review Matrix

I created the Matrix so that I could compare all the journals easier: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1218QeTwPv8cYIld9Ym38ZxTFiI5yK4weVjiWOE7u8GM/edit#gid=0

I’ve also structured the headings & subheadings (literature review) of the draft dissertation this week.
During class time, Dr. Hayati revised my subheadings a bit and helped me to be more clear about what I was going to write for my dissertation.

Writing Process

During class time, Dr. Hayati revised my subheadings a bit and helped me to be more clear about what I was going to write for my dissertation. The title used to be “UI/UX Design for Elderly User in COVID-19 Healthcare Application.”, but I changed it to “COVID-19 Application Design for Elderly User”

In week 3, I managed to do the cover page, table of contents and introduction part. I went through seniors’ work to see how they did it. I also went through dr. Hayati’s recording to make sure I did it right. I also tried to write my Literature Review but I had quite a hard time. It took me so long to think of how to write each subheadings even though I already had my metrics and Mendeley. But after rereading the original journal over and over again, I managed to start slow. I couldn’t finish it this week though, but I would try finishing it in the following weeks.

In week 5, I started writing the findings. It wasn’t a burden for me because I think I wrote sufficient data last semester. So I just need to put the data collection and analysis in this part. But I also added my own explanation and arguments to cover my datas. It’s all about reexplaining my gathered data from the focus group and email interview.

In week 6, I started writing discussion, conclusion and other sections left to finish. I tried to read my writings from a reader’s perspective like what Dr. Hayati suggested, I edited them several times. I found this method helpful to improve my dissertation as I kept forgetting to write some definitions for unfamiliar terms.

I managed to finish the dissertation on time in Week 7, which is very rewarding for me. I didn’t expect myself to be able to write a scholarly paper.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 1:

General Feedback
  • only use APA citation
  • test your plagiarism only on Taylor’s web. Do not do it on other websites as you might plagiarize yourself.
  • don’t drag your work, it will be a snowballing effect

WEEK 2:

General Feedback
  • Add similarities & differences in the Matrix
  • Pay attention to In-text citation (APA workshop website)
Specific Feedback
  • Write down the similarities & differences of the journals that you found in Mendeley

  • Be consistent with the acronym

  • If you’re going to talk about many COVID-19 apps, make sure to write about them in the overview (section 2.0)

  • Simplify the working title

WEEK 4:

General Feedback

  • Use consistent grammar

  • Consider having diagram figure in 3.0 so it won’t confuse your reader about how you collect you primary data.

  • Use different continuous numbers for figure & table because they are different.

Specific Feedback

  • If you’re writing a dissertation, better to cite from scholarly articles.

WEEK 6:

Specific Feedback
  • If you’re uncertain of what to write, try checking out scholarly article from Taylor’s library
  • Maximize the use of Mendeley writing notes and highlights so you don’t need to read through the whole articles again
  • If you don’t understand the article and don’t see the matrics as whole, you won’t be able to have the material to compare and contrast.General Feedback
General Feedback
  • Don’t put citation in abstract
  • After you finish all your parts, go back to the introduction part and then try to put some of the intro part in the conclusion

WEEK 7:

General Feedback
  • Reading through the reflection may be useful for section 5. The constraints about the research can be a reflection.
  • Avoid contradiction
  • Any number in the passage shall be written except for percentage and year.
  • When you re-examine your writing, try to understand your writing as a new reader. Find out if your contents are clear enough.

REFLECTION

Experience
Following the weekly deadlines was very helpful to keep me on track. This method is better than last semester's Research Methodology, I'm way more relaxed and on track this semester. Less live lectures also work for me. I'm better in reading than listening to lectures, so this semester I enjoy more reading through the documents and slides that were posted in Google Classroom.

Observation
I observed that my writing is significantly improving compared to the last semester. It was still a difficult task to do though, but I feel like the hardest part has passed in last semester. I learned so much about research writing and dissertation structure during this project.

Findings
I found that writing really helped me to structure the thoughts and datas I had. It helped me to understand the UI/UX design for elderly people more in depth. I also found that my datas were sufficient and I was so grateful that I worked hard last semester.
