WEEK 5 : Poster Design Development

- Poster Design Development -

"A poster is a temporary promotion of an idea, product, or event put up in a public space for mass consumption. Typically, posters include both textual and graphic elements, although a poster may be either wholly graphical or wholly text.Posters is a conventional medium to convey information to the target audience. "
- Wikipedia

Posters is a conventional medium to convey information to the target audience. Posters can be cluttered or straightforward. If too many colors, fonts, images or animated figures are involved in conveying information or message, it confuses the viewers.

Mr. Martin said, a poster should be leisurely striking and appealing, so that the viewers are able to notice and understand the message conveyed in a short glance. The best way example of contemporary posters are movie posters.

Figure 1.0: The Queen of Chinatown by Joseph Jarrow, Broadway poster, 1899

Before making a poster, it's important to ask these questions:
  • Is it a poster for brand awareness?
  • Is it an advertising poster?
  • Is it a Public Service Announcement poster?

- Public Service Announcement

A public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

What we are doing is making a Public Service Announcement about Covid-19 mental health effects.
- Isolation
- Job Lost
- Eating Disorder
- Anxiety Disorder

- Things To Do To Make A Poster

1. Research about your topic
  • Study and gather all related information about your topic.
  • Write a summary about your topic
  • Highlight the key points of your summary
  • Define the Title
  • Define the Slogan
  • Define the Details
  • Define the Call For Action
2. Define your concept
  • Create a section for each contents (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
  • Sketch your mock up poster
  • Fill in with details
3. Start to develop your design projects
  • Draft the digital poster based on your sketch
  • Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
  • Apply color, typography, textures & effects
  • Finalize your design with color correction

WEEK 6 : Poster Design Execution

  • Public Service Announcement (PSA)
PSA is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

- Things To Do
  • Research About the Topic:
Mental Health of Young Adult During Pandemic. Research on what happens to us and what happens to others. Find the topic and materials online, then summarize it.

  • Define the Concept
Decide on Idea, and approach:
How the designer EVOKES viewer’s feeling, deliver strong impression?
Shock Value →Brutal
Provocative →Upsetting
Humor →Sarcastic
Sensitive →Heart warming
Artistic →Subtle

Figure 1.1: Examples of Shock Value →Brutal

Figure 1.2: Examples of Shock Value →Brutal

Figure 1.3: Examples of Provocative →Upsetting

Mr. Martin asked which one is more provocative between these two posters. I would say the left one ,which has the pastor holding a broom, is more provoking. But it depends on the target audience. For smokers, the right one might be more provoking whereas the left one is more sensitive for Christians.

Figure 1.4: Examples of Provocative →Upsetting

The figure below shows an example of provoking painting in the pre-industrial era, perhaps 200 years ago. Why is it provoking? Because it's a very private moment for a woman. Women in that era were required to appear polite, with long skirts and covered body, while the woman in this painting seems like she does not care at that moment. And it leaves the audience to think whether they judge her or not.

Figure 1.5: Examples of Provocative →Upsetting

Figure 1.6: Examples of Senstive →Heartwarming

Figure 1.6: Examples of Artistic →Subtle

  • Start to develop your design projects
  • Most mental Health PSA
- Better to make the posters by taking gentle approach.
- Graphics work well.
- Target audiences vulnerable.
- Ask yourself how your images and texts deliver the message?

Figure 1.7: Examples of Mental Health Poster

Figure 1.8: Examples of Mental Health Poster

Note:
- Know your target audience
- Make a design that subtly remind the target audience of something

WEEK 7: Color Theory

Color Theory is how we understand color in science and art. It explains how humans perceive color, and the messages colors communicate artistically and emotionally.

Figure 1.9: The Color Wheel
  • Color is created by the substraction of light.
  • The CMYK (Cyan, magenta, yellow and black) are the primary colors of printing.
  • RGB color is used to display on your computer screen. Color is created by mixing red, green and blue light sources of various intensities.
  • Hue: the most basic of color terms and denotes an object’s color.
  • Shade: a hue to which black has been added. For example, red + black = burgundy.
  • Tint: a hue to which white has been added. For example, red + white = pink.
  • Tone: a color to which black and white (or grey) have been added.

- Colour Harmony

The arrangement of the colors in design in the most attractive and effective way for users’ perception.

Figure 1.10: Color Harmony

  • Monochromatic: one color with different shades and tint
  • Analogous: Analogous are 3 colors located right next to each other on the color wheel.
  • Complementary: Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel. This scheme is opposite to analogous and monochromatic since it aims to produce high contrast.
  • Split-Complementary:  Split-Complementary involves the use of three colors. Start with one color, find its complement and then use the two colors on either side of it.
  • Triadic: Triadic colors are evenly spaced around the color wheel and tend to be very bright and dynamic.

Figure 1.11 & 1.12: Complementary vs. Analogous

Figure 1.13: Split-Complementary

Figure 1.14: Triadic

- The Psychology of Color

Colors have an extraordinary ability to provoke specific emotions for each individual and to attract people’s attention and harmony simultaneously. While perceptions of color are somewhat subjective, some effects have universal meaning.

Figure 1.15: The Psychology of Color

Figure 1.16: Cool vs. Warm Color

  • Warm Color: Warm colors often evoke feelings of happiness, optimism and energy. They can also have an attention grabbing effect and signal danger or make you take action.
  • Cool Color:  Cool colors are usually calming and soothing but can also express sadness. Purple is often used to help spark creativity as it’s a mixture of blue (calm) and red (intense).
  • Black: Black is often used sparingly – such as for text – but it works quite well as a primary color element (like for backgrounds). Black adds an air of sophistication and elegance, and also mystery, though with much bolder confidence.
  • White: As primary, white gives off an impression of clean, virtuous, healthy. White pairs well with just about anything, making it ideal as a secondary color.

PROJECT 2A / DIGITAL IMAGING

- Exercise 1: Photo Manipulation -

WEEK 5:

- Part 1 (Shazam Exercise)

In this Hearst Mansion exercise, students need to place a photo of Shazam in another different photo of Hearst Mansion, students should do some color corrections to make Shazam look like he belongs in that environment. The media that is used in this exercise is Adobe Photoshop.

The main tools we learned in this exercise are:
  1. Quick Selection Tool
  2. Layer Mask
  3. Filters
  4. Color Correction
Figure 2.0: Selecting Shazam Using 'Quick Selection Tool', 09.20.2021

First of all, I placed Shazam's image and Hearst Mansion image in the Photoshop canvas. Then, using the 'Quick Selection Tool' from the 'Tool Bar'. I found these '+' and '-' button very helpful because they allowed me to fix some error on the selection.

Figure 2.1: 'Quick Selection Tool', 09.20.2021

After I finished selecting everything I needed, I moved Shazam's body to the Hearst Mansion. I resized it using Command + T into the right human body scale compared to the mansion.

Figure 2.2: Placing Shazam in Hearst Mansion, 09.20.2021

I went to Image > Adjustments > Match Color to adjust the Luminance, Color Intensity, and Fade. Also to match Shazam's color to the Hearst Mansion (Background). I adjusted them until the color had the right shadow, light and tone of the mansion. I made Shazam a bit bluish so that he looked like he's part of that mansion.

Figure 2.3: Using 'Match Color', 09.20.2021

The next step was adding the shadow to make it more believable. I used 'Brush' and I reduced the 'Opacity'. Then, I used 'Gaussian Blur' to make the shadow look more natural.

Figure 2.4: Making the Shadow, 09.20.2021

Figure 2.5: Masking Reflections, 09.20.2021

I selected the Reflection that I wanted to keep using 'Pen Tool'. Then, I went to 'Paths' and chose to 'load path as a selection'. After that, I selected both the Reflection 'Path' and the Reflection Layer, then created a layer mask. Resulting the unselected part of Reflection to vanish. Lastly, I did some color correction for the reflection and it's done.

Personal Note:
  • 'Paths' are vector-based (line) drawings. Paths can be stretched ad re-shaped without losing details. 'Paths' are also great for selecting irregular objects. Because paths' shape can easily be edited after it's created, Paths can be fine-tuned to exactly match an irregular border.

Figure 1.6: "Shazam in Hearst Mansion" Final Outcome, 09.20.2021

- Part 2 (My Reflection)

First, I searched for a setting where the light comes from the left (of the frame), so that my photograph outcome suits the Hearst Mansion's lighting. Secondly, I put the white backdrop so the background became pretty simple and easier to edit.

When the setting was ready, I took some photos of myself using my phone with a tripod. I took it from an eye-level angle so the image doesn't look distorted. The camera was placed in an angle where the point of view is set at the eye-level of the subject that is captured (which is me).

Figure 3.0: Original Self Photograph, 09.26.2021

I traced my photo using 'Quick Selection Tool' and put it in Hearst Mansion image using Photoshop. I resize my body so it has the right scale as the setting. I did the same method like when i put Shazam. I used 'Match Color' so the color suits the ambience. I adjusted the 'Luminance' into 81, and 'Color Intensity' into 114.
  • Luminance : How bright the color
  • Color Intensity : How strong the color
  • Fade : How much the color blends
Figure 3.1: Adjusting the size, 09.26.2021

Figure 3.2: Using 'Match Color', 09.26.2021

Figure 3.3: Adjusting 'Color Balance', 09.26.2021

Next, I created the shadow using brush. I lowered the 'Opacity' and I added 'Gaussian Blur' so it became smoother. The shadow plays a huge role in making my reflection belong to the background. Shadow makes the reflection look real and it just makes sense.

Figure 3.4: Creating Shadows, 09.26.2021

The pool reflection is the next thing that I made. I duplicated my reflection and flip it vertically. I use 'Layer Masking' to cut out the feet part so it looks like a reflection on the pool. Then, I darkened the color by adjusting the 'Brightness' and I lowered the 'Vibrance' so it becomes paler.

- Exercise 2: Recoloring Black & White -

WEEK 6:

- Part 1 (Recoloring with Brush Tool)

Tutorial Video: https://youtu.be/DeGpKh6pMfk

In this exercise, we are to recolor a black & white photo using Adobe Photoshop.

Figure 4.0: Original Black & White Photo, 09.28.2021

First, I covered an area which has the same color tone using brush. For example, I covered the skin with cream color in one layer. Then, I covered the hair with a different color in another layer. To make the color blend in with the shadows and textures of the original photograph, i had to change the 'Blending Mode' for each layer. I set Soft Light Mode for the hair, coat, lips and background. And I used Color mode for the skin because the color looked more solid.

- Part 2 (Recoloring with Layer Masks)

For the 2nd part of the exercise, we were to recolor a black and white portrait using a different method, which is Layer Masking. We needed to select one b&w image from a folder that Mr. Marten gave. The folder contains many photographs of people with different race and skin tone. I chose the photo a caucasian girl below.

Figure 5.0: Original Black and White Photo, 10.09.2021

I was very interested in experimenting with bold colors, like red, orange and green. So I picked this picture below as a reference.

Figure 5.3: Masking the Hair, 10.09.2021

Figure 5.4: Coloring the Hair, 10.09.2021

I chose darker colors because the original portrait seems to have a dark lighting. I used dark pine green for the eyes, bronze orange for the hair, red for the lips, and pine green for the tank top. I liked how the color turned out, it suits the lighting and the color of caucasian skin and hair tone.

PROJECT 2B / POSTER DESIGN

- Research -

WEEK 6:

Research on "mental heath affected by COVID 19"

- How are you, as an individual affected by COVID19? Physically and mentally? Are they related?
  • Answer:
COVID 19 were pretty bad in my home country, Indonesia. Since March 2020, the numbers of infected arose rapidly and people were forced to stay home and self-quarantine. So almost everybody–including me–had low levels of physical activity for a year, and it really gives negative effects on my health, both physically and mentally. They are related, because physically, my eating habit changed, and I believe that my tendency to eat more is caused by my mental health: I eat out of boredom and stress, and I don't have much thing to do besides eating and sitting in front of my laptop. I know this is a problem, but in this difficult times, eating seems to give comfort and I feel better when I eat. This pandemic has indeed affected my well-being and quality of life.

- Research online: "young adult/student's mental heath affected by COVID19", save/bookmark the articles that you are interested. Make a summary of each articles.

Young adults are at high risk for increases in loneliness and mental health problems during the COVID 19 pandemic. This article is about a study on increases in loneliness in a young adult. The data is taken from 564 young adults (ages 22-29, 60.7% women) and were collected in January 2020 (pre-pandemic) and April/May 2020 (during pandemic).

Loneliness increased from January to April/May and changes in loneliness were greater for females, those with higher perceived social support in January, and those with greater concerns about the pandemic's social impacts. Depression (but not anxiety) increased during this time with changes in loneliness accounting for much of the increase in depression.

Intervention strategies with young adults need to address loneliness and feelings of reduced social support during this time, especially for those who may have had greater disruption in their social lives.

University students are known to be more vulnerable, they tend to suffer from higher levels of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and disordered eating compared to the general population. Research was done on 2,534 university students, of which 61% were from women, 79% from non-Hispanic Whites, and 20% from graduate students.

And the result showed that students who were above-average social class, spent at least two hours outside, or less than eight hours on electronic screens were likely to experience lower levels of psychological impact. While students who were women, in fair/poor health, of below-average relative family income, spending 8 or more hours on screens daily, or who knew someone infected with COVID-19 experienced higher levels of psychological impact.

So, the conclusion is health, screen-time and family (economic and health) condition are the determinant of the students' psychological state in this pandemic time.

Figure 6.1: Article 2, 09.26.2021

Summary:

The rapid assessment amplified the voices of 8,444 adolescents and young people between the ages of 13 and 29 in nine countries and territories in the region. The report gives an account of the feelings they faced in the first months of the COVID 19 pandemic situation.

And here are the results:
  1. 27% reported feeling anxiety and 15% depression in the last seven days. For 30%, the main reason influencing their current emotions is the economic situation.
  2. 46% report having less motivation to do activities they usually enjoyed. 36% feel less motivated to do regular chores.
  3. 43% of the women feel pessimistic about the future compared to 31% of the male participants.
  4. 73% have felt the need to ask for help concerning their physical and mental well-being. Despite this, 40% did not ask for help.
Despite facing great difficulties, many adolescents and young people have found different ways to face new challenges and cope with their emotions, such as:
  1. Ask for help to maintain physical and emotional well-being.
  2. Keeping a busy schedule that involves a lot of physical activity.
  3. Avoid panic and continue the normal routine.
  4. Wake up early to be more productive, self-awareness also helps a lot.
"I don't have an exact formula. The only thing is that I try not to stress, avoid panic and continue my normal routine. In the end, I told myself that stress does more demage than the virus itself."
–James, 22 years, Haití

- View posters on Pinterest, limited to posters designed with IMAGES/PHOTOS and texts, bypass posters designed with GRAPHIC and texts. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected posters? The composition? The colour? The way the message been delivered?

Figure 6.3: Folklore Album Poster, Pinterest, 09.26.2021

What I like about this Folklore Album Poster is how they use a receipt as the whole element. The idea is just brilliant and unique. The composition is balanced. People can't say the color selection is wrong or the fonts are too small or simple, because it's a receipt, and that is exactly how a receipt looks like. All the information are complete and conveyed clearly because of the white space, it makes the poster neat.

Figure 6.4: Spritz-Y Poster, Pinterest, 09.26.2021

The second poster looks like it is for advertisement purpose. It says "FEELING SPRIZ-Y" and it's hard for anyone to not notice the slogan as it fills the background. The elements used in this particular poster is only a traced drink photograph and Bold Types, however, the drink stands out well. The contrast plays a huge role in this poster and it really emphasizes the drink. The color scheme makes the drink look appealing that the viewers are tempted to try it. I think this poster really managed to make the viewers feel its fresh vibe of the product. A nice example of Photographic Poster.

Figure 6.5: BccN Poster, Pinterest, 09.26.2021

This third poster is made as an advertisement for Barcelona Creative Commons Film Festival. Somehow, at the first glance, the eyes look like they are a product of graphic design, however, they are actually a photographic image. They really catch the attention of the viewers with the color selection. I also like how the texts are contrast with the background and are placed in a unique order. The title is very obvious that it's hard for anyone to miss it. The other information are also very short and clear, which is great for posters. And overall, the composition looks perfectly balanced.

- View posters on Pinterest, limited to PSA posters only. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected posters? The composition? The colour? The way the message been delivered?

Figure 6.6: GOONJ Poster, Pinterest, 09.26.2021

This poster is about donation campaign for children. It shows an unfortunate condition of a child who is sitting on an empty soil with no roof or floor, let alone toys. What I like about this poster is the image of an imaginary horse toy. It plays a huge role to invite people to change this child's life to the better. By donating materials, they can give this children a toy, which is a symbol of a better living. The message written on the poster is very straight forward: "LITTLE NEEDS. Material donation can make a difference." Very thoughtful and touching indeed, makes anyone who sees it feel the urge to help and make a difference. When it comes to the composition, it looks decent and it's working well. The color selection is also harmonious and contrasted well with the texts and horse toy element.

Figure 6.7: Plastic Campaign Poster, Pinterest, 09.26.2021

When I first saw this poster on Pinterest, I immediately know that it's a PSA poster. It clearly has an objective of raising awareness of the people and changing public attitudes towards the use of plastic. The poster plays with contrast to show the comparison, and the color scheme are good enough to show the elements.

The image shows the comparison of how long it takes to make plastic 'gone' in different environment. It only takes human 1 second to throw used plastic away, but it took hundreds of years for it to be decomposed in sea and land. So the purpose of this poster is to convey facts about plastic, in hopes that people are more aware of how hard it is for earth to decompose plastic. And even though the message is quite implied, but anyone who reads it will get it.

Figure 6.8: FPA Poster, Pinterest, 09.26.2021

The focal point of this poster is clearly the burned cigarette. But when we look closely, its burned part looks like a burned forest. At this moment, the viewers will understand what the poster is trying to say without even reading the texts, which is the danger of forest fire caused by carelessly tossed cigarettes.

The color scheme is simple, but it managed to make the image looks realistic and eye-catching. The text, however, is too small. But I'm pretty sure people will get the meaning even before reading the text so it's not that big of a deal. The image delivered the message very strong already.

Mock Up #2
I like the idea of Mock Up #2 better. The concept of this poster is to make it look soothing and relaxing. I made every text element like they came from our mobile phone. I used text bubble which I made myself, and I made the title & slogan with a Font that Apple device uses so it looks familiar. I still use a photograph I found from the internet, however, I'm planning to reconstruct the poster myself using several different images to create a new scene.

- Developing The Design -

- Process

I collected the photographs from the internet. I wanted to keep the dark setting with blue and red neon light, so I chose these photos. I also found photos of a man and a woman sitting on a sofa which are suitable for the lighting and the whole frame. I saved a video call template as well.

Figure 7.0: Design Elements, 10.23.2021

For the video call effect, I used Magic Wand tool to cropped out the video call template until only the buttons were left, then I cropped the woman's photo and placed it behind the template.

Figure 7.1 and 7.2: Video Call Template, 10.23.2021

Next, I placed the woman in video call beside the man and made sure she has the right size so it looked like she's beside him. I placed the man on a sofa at a lower side of the frame, then I traced and deleted the background. I replaced the background with the red and blue wall. I adjusted the color balance of the man and his sofa so it suits the red and blue lighting. I split the sofa vertically into two and ajusted the left one into blue color, and the right side into red.
I also used brush and blurred it to create a red light reflection.

Figure 7.3 and 7.4: Using Brush and Layers, 10.23.2021

I decreased the video call opacity so it looked like an imaginary projected virtual screen. I also adjusted its color balance to make it look more bluish and screen-like. And as a finishing touch, I added noise for every layer except for the text. I like this effect because every image had different levels of grain since they came from different source, and the noise kind of unified the whole layer and made them look like they came in one piece.

Figure 7.5 and 7.6: Color Balance and Noise, 10.23.2021

- Final Outcome

Figure 7.7: Final Outcome in JPG, 10.23.2021

Figure 7.8: Final Outcome in PDF, 10.23.2021

Description:

During COVID-19 pandemic, people are forced to stay at home and they cannot interact with others like they used to. People are more concerned about their physical health (which is good), however, many do not realize that a pandemic could also make people feel isolated and lonely, and many lead to stress and anxiety.

With its positive and heartwarming approach, this poster reminds the viewers to take care of their mental health as well, because it’s as important. The campaign is to spread awareness of the importance of “asking help” whenever people feel like they have mental issues. It’s a kind reminder for people to take a break and pause, just breath and focus on their mental state. It also leads to a website that provides free mental checkup.

The poster shows a man who’s having a movie night with his partner who is virtually present. They connect through video call. Both of them represent the idea of “taking a break and just relaxing”, because in times like this, it’s important to just enjoy the moment and connect with people virtually.

I want to make all the elements in this poster relate with digital communication and technology. For the font, I used San Fransisco Pro, which is the font that Apple products use. I hope this would make people feel more familiar and SF Pro is also very readable. I also used chat bubbles to emphasize the detailed information, chat bubbles are proven to be less boring and more appealing to read. Lastly, I used dark red and blue as the main color because they create contrast and they are good backgrounds for the texts and other elements.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 7:
(Poster Design) Mr. Martin reminded us to focus on using images and less graphic. And he wanted us to complete the slides.

WEEK 9:
(Poster Design) Mr. Martin said they were both very good. But I should post the process of how I edited all those images in the blog. He wanted me to reconstruct the poster myself using multiple photographs since I only used one photograph in the mock up design.

REFLECTION

Experience
This project contains so many tasks but I enjoyed learning new tools in Photoshop, (using brush, adjustments, layer masking, recoloring b&w photo, etc.). I enjoyed recoloring photographs a lot, it feels like I can do magic. And project 2B was not only interesting but it also opened my mind to the problems we often ignored during pandemic: mental health crisis. Mr. Martin gave so much new insight on what's happening and how our design can affect people. This project really did give me a new motivation and purpose for why I design.

Observations
I observed that it's really important to know who the target audience are, that way I can determine my design's approach and create a more impactful message for the viewers. Design is all about communication.

Findings
I found that It got easier for me to edit in Photoshop because everything is already familiar now. I also found how masking plays a huge role in digital design and it really helps now that I already understand how it works. Lastly, I found that any form of design could affect so many things in society, both good and bad movement.
